CLEVELAND – The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) has added 17 articulated buses to its fleet. These replace standard 40-foot vehicles that had outlived their useful life. They are being used on routes #22 and #26, two high-ridership routes on the West Side that operate out of the Triskett garage.

Articulated vehicles are often called “buses that bend.” Clevelanders were introduced to the articulated vehicles in October 2008, when the HealthLine began operating on Euclid Avenue. Since then, many riders and community officials have encouraged RTA to offer these vehicles on other high-ridership routes.

Here are facts about articulated vehicles.

  • Standard design, articulated, with 3 doors on the curb side

The HealthLine

  • Called Rapid Transit Vehicles (RTVs)
  • 3 more vehicles, to be delivered later this fall, will operate on ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel.
  • Operate out of the Hayden Garage in East Cleveland
  • 5 doors, 3 on the curb side and 2 on the road side
  • 63 feet long articulated
  • Hybrid-powered
  • Capacity of 100 riders, 47 seated and 53 standing
  • Price: $850,000 ($725,000 for the ones that operate on diesel fuel)
