rail shutdown beginning Sept. 16 CLEVELAND -- Beginning Monday, Sept. 16, all RTA
rail service EAST of Tower City will be shut down at 7 p.m. each night, Monday-Friday,
until mid-April 2003, to allow crews to complete a rail rehab. The shutdown includes the Red, Blue and Green
lines. It does NOT affect the Waterfront Line, or the Red Line from Tower City
to Hopkins Airport. Shuttle bus service will start at Tower City on
Public Square, and make stops at each rail station. Buses will be designated as
Red Line Shuttle, Blue Line Shuttle and Green Line Shuttle. They will operate
approximately every 15 minutes, from 7 p.m.-midnight. Service will resume each
morning at the regularly scheduled time. New timetables are available. Rail service may be scheduled for select special
events. Rail service to the Browns home football games will not be affected. Customers should go to their regular stations.
Instead of boarding a train, they will board a bus at a designated stop,
adjacent to each rail station. The bus ride will probably take about 10-15
minutes longer than the rail, depending on traffic conditions. Operators will
stop only at the rail stations. Shuttle bus fare will be $1.50, the same as rail
fare. All regular RTA passes and fare media will be honored. RTA has hired a contractor to complete a $6.6
million rehab of a key area -- 2.5 miles of track from Tower City to E. 55th
St. This is one of the few places in the nation that is used by both light rail
and heavy rail. The improved track will provide enhanced service.
Passengers will enjoy a smoother, faster and safer ride. For more service information, call 216-621-9500,
