of the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) and the today dedicated a $1.7
million transit center and park-n-ride lot in one of the area's busiest
corridors -- Interstate 480. Even before its
dedication, the facility has been a huge success. RTA began using the
Park-N-Ride lot on Nov. 4. Now, more than 200 cars a day are using the
facility, a huge increase from the 75 cars a day that used former Park-N-Ride
lot on Lorain Road. The new facility has 300 total spaces. The transit
center, .,
is on the southeast corner of the intersection of I-480 and Great Northern
Blvd. It provides an easy access for many commuters from the western suburbs
and Lorain County, with non-stop bus service to downtown Cleveland. The facility is a
cooperative effort of RTA and , which operates the North
Olmsted Municipal Bus Line (NOMBL). Some funding was provided by the The contractor was Cold

General Manager Joe Calabrese. "Because of the efforts of Mayor Norman
Musial, City Council and the City Planning Commission, a special transit zoning
overlay district was created. This kept the project moving forward." RTA will

operates transit centers near the Euclid Square Mall in Euclid, near the Westgate Mall in Fairview Park, and near Southgate in Maple Heights. Future transit
centers are planned near the Parmatown Mall, and in Brecksville, Mayfield, Oakwood and Independence. RTA also operates
Park-N-Ride facilities in Westlake,
Berea, Strongsville, Brecksville and Solon. This is RTA's first facility to
service the heavily traveled I-480 corridor. It ranked first in transit market
potential and need for service in RTA's Park-n-Ride Priority Analysis. RTA

cost-effective public transportation services. RTA's 2,740
employees operate 758 buses on 1,100 route miles, and 108 rail cars on 34 miles
of track. Bus operators drive more than 90,000 route miles every day, and RTA
carries more than 45 percent of all public transit riders in Ohio. RTA's bus
and rail fleet is the 13th largest in the nation, and RTA carries an
average of 181,000 riders each weekday. Revenue from a
one percent countywide sales tax makes up more than 70 percent of RTA's $230
million operating fund. Passenger fares generate 20 percent, and the other 10
percent comes from federal and state funds, and transit advertising. In 2001, more
than 58.2 million passengers rode RTA's trains, buses, Community Circulators
and Paratransit vehicles. For
