Safety and Security: Escalator Safety

BEFORE YOU RIDE

  • Check for loose garments. These may include long dresses, scarves, mittens trench coats or loose belts. Loose shoelaces often get caught in escalator machinery, so make sure that shoes are tied. If your child's clothing still has drawstrings, remove them.
  • Learn where the emergency shutoff buttons are in case you need to stop the escalator. These buttons should be at the top and bottom of each escalator, on the right of the escalator when facing the stairs.
  • Do not use the escalator when transporting a large package or when pushing a device with wheels -- baby strollers, baggage carts, hand trucks or shopping carts. The escalator should not be used by someone with a cane, a walker or on crutches.
  • Do not use the escalator if it is not in motion. Escalator steps are not the correct height for normal walking, and the risk of tripping and falling is greatly increased.
  • Do not ride barefoot.
  • If you are uncomfortable boarding or riding an escalator, use an elevator instead.

CHILDREN

  • Children under the age of 7 should be accompanied by an adult. Always hold children firmly with one hand. Do not permit children to sit or play on the steps.
  • Do not bring children onto escalators in strollers, walkers, or carts.

HOW TO RIDE

  • Watch the direction of the moving steps, and enter only when steps are going in the proper direction.
  • Step on and off with caution. Take extra care if you are wearing bifocals.
  • Grasp the handrail as you step promptly onto the moving step.
  • Face forward.
  • Keep a steady grip on the handrail.
  • Stand in the center of the steps. Avoid the edges.
  • Hold small packages firmly in one hand. Don’t rest your handbags or parcels on the handrail.
  • Carry dogs up or down, or use the elevator.
  • Pay attention to the moving walkway—don’t be distracted by your surroundings.
  • Don’t lean against or over the sides.
  • Don’t run.
  • Never sit on the escalator step.
  • To prevent a pile-up, keep walking after exiting the escalator. Step off promptly. Don’t stop to talk or look around. Other passengers may be behind you.
