GCRTA (RTA) is pleased to announce the award recipients from the 2008 Transit Waiting Environments application process. Overall, we received 12
applications representing diverse groups and locations within our service area. Unfortunately, due to our funding limitations, we could only award four projects out of
the many excellent applications.
The four projects proposed to receive funding are:
- City of Euclid – Lake Shore Boulevard / Bliss Lane / Babbitt Road: This project, located at a key transfer point on the east
side, was identified as part of a completed Transit for Livable Communities (TLCI) grant and is supported by additional funding from the City of Euclid and private
matches. The work will include a shelter, paved waiting area, and other amenities for the transit rider.
- City of Lakewood – Detroit Avenue and Warren Road: Building off of the recent traffic adjustments on Detroit Avenue to provide a
more transit-friendly environment, this project will further enhance transit through improvements to the waiting environment with the introduction of a sheltered
waiting area, additional seating, and public art. In addition, the project will support other City of Lakewood-funded streetscape enhancements and a signage and
wayfinding plan co-funded by Heritage Ohio & the City of Lakewood.
- Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization – Gordon Square (W 65 Street and Detroit Road): The Transit Waiting Environment grant will augment the current
$3.5 million dollar streetscape project to provide for even more enhancements to the transit stops through shelters reflective of the arts district.
- The D.H. Ellison Company – Lorain Avenue and W 41 Street: The private developer is currently renovating a brick structure from 1868. As part of that work, a
neighboring wood structure was demolished. The owner is renovating the area as a public space and will use the Transit Waiting Environment grant to augment his funds
to provide more amenities for the riders.
RTA was very excited by the strong response to this program. We look forward to coordinating another round of applications in late 2009, contingent on having the funds
available for 2010.
