Cleveland OH – On Wednesday, April 3, 2024, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) awarded $700,000 in grant funds to the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) as part of the Biden-Harris Administration and U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration $17.6 million in grants going to 20 communities in 16 states to support equitable transit-oriented development (TOD).
The $700,000 grant to GCTRA will pay for a project to plan TOD along the proposed Lorain Corridor, a multi-modal planning project that will incorporate bus rapid transit with GCRTA's existing heavy rail system. The planning project will look at proposed bike infrastructure, pedestrian access, better connecting to jobs and activities on Cleveland's West Side.
"Great news," said GCRTA Deputy General Manager Engineering & Project Management, Michael J. Schipper. "We are very appreciative to win this new grant a year after having won a grant for $432,000 from FTA to plan another bus-rapid-transit route on Broadway from near downtown Cleveland through Slavic Village and Garfield Heights."
The Lorain Corridor Bus-Rapid-Transit (BRT) on Lorain Road extends 15.7 miles from North Olmsted through neighboring Fairview Park to Ohio City on Cleveland’s West Side.
The development of the Lorain Corridor and other priority corridors demonstrates how GCRTA is customer focused and community engaged in driving the greater Cleveland region forward.
