 New Triskett Rapid  Station now attractive and ADA-compliant

CLEVELAND - Triskett, the eighth Red Line Rapid station to undergo a full reconstruction from the ground up, was dedicated today by officials of the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA).

The dedication came after two years of steady work on the $8.4 million project. Work was completed on time and within the budget, says RTA CEO and General Manager Joe Calabrese. Federal funds paid for 80 percent of the project costs.

The station, at 13405 Lakewood Heights Blvd., serves Lakewood and Cleveland's West Park neighborhood. Located in Cleveland Ward 19, and is easily accessible from I-90. The original station was built in 1958.

The new station opened to the public on Aug. 15, 2000, but the dedication was postponed until construction crews finished a major nearby paving project.

From this station, commuters can reach Cleveland Hopkins International Airport in less than 10 minutes, and Tower City in less than 15 minutes.

Features of the new station

  • Fully accessible, it meets the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • The former pedestrian walkway tunnel has been eliminated. An eye-catching overhead skyway, visible from I-90, brings people over the tracks instead of underneath them.
  • Clear story windows allow the sunlight to flow directly into the building, thus improving security at the facility.
  • As part of RTA's "Arts in Transit" program, artist Michael Hayden created holographic glass panels on the bridge, and windscreens on the platform. His previous work includes the neon, music and light art in the underground concourse tunnel at Chicago's O'Hare Airport.
  • The contemporary architectural style, "contributes to the economic vitality and continued development of the neighborhood," says Calabrese.
  • Digital signs offer CNN news, weather and sports to both riders on the rail platform and those transferring from a bus. The signs, which also offer RTA service-related information, are part of a RTA pilot project to increased customer communication.
  • Two vending machines - part of another RTA pilot project - offer customers an opportunity to buy bottles of soft drinks.
  • Four RTA bus lines -- 46, 70, 75X and 83 -- serve the station.

Other facility improvements:

  • The newly resurfaced parking lot offers 669 free parking places, plus eight handicapped places.
  • Triskett Roadway was repaved from Triskett Avenue to the I-90 bridge.
  • A new wooden fence was installed along the perimeter of the RTA property line, between area homes and the new station.
