The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) gave special recognition and honor to Paratransit Operator James “Jimmy” E. Smith for achieving 45 years of safe driving during their annual Employee Recognition Banquet on Thursday, October 30, 2025.
“We are extremely proud to recognize Paratransit Operator Jimmy Smith, and the exceptional passenger experience he brings to the Greater Cleveland community,” said GCRTA Director, Paratransit District, Nicholas Davidson. “He personifies the key attributes of safety, customer experience and teamwork on which GCRTA was founded over 50 years ago.”
Hired by GCRTA in 1978 as a Paratransit Operator, Mr. Smith has accomplished 47 years of service at the authority as a Dispatcher, Service Monitor and Operator. In 2025, Mr. Smith achieved his 45th year of safe operating by completing another full year of service without a preventable collision.
Throughout his career, Mr. Smith has been recognized for his commitment to excellence, earning accolades such as Operator of the Month, a Champion of Safety Award, and a 40-Year Safe Operator Award. Most recently, he earned second place in the GCRTA 2025 Bus & Paratransit Roadeo event. His career is a legacy of dedication, safety, and exceptional service.
Mr. Smith identifies all his passengers as precious cargo as he continues to drive as a Paratransit Operator for GCRTA with no plans of retiring anytime soon.
