News & Updates | Newsroom News & Updates: Newsroom RTA News June 14, 2007 Euclid Corridor progress makes major strides
Crews are completing new platforms and sidewalks.
Newly planted trees are blooming, and improved lights are being installed. Soon, attention should shift to two other special
components of the Silver Line:
The first two of 61 stations will soon be
completed. One will be in Midtown, near the intersection of East 40th
Street and Euclid Avenue, and the other will be in East Cleveland. The stations will be at 36 locations along the
Corridor, placed every 1,500 feet in a median strip. A transit-only lane is
being built on each side of the strip, so passengers can board vehicles in both
directions. The stations, made of steel and glass, feature
off-board fare collection, signage for next vehicle arrival, increased safety,
security cameras, and improved lighting. Some stations also offer touch-screen
interactive kiosks.
A prototype of the new 62-foot long Rapid Transit
Vehicle (RTV) is in Cleveland for two months of testing and public viewing. Starting in 2008, the vehicle will operate on the
Silver Line on Euclid Avenue. A hybrid-electric, it is quiet and
environmentally friendly. It is articulated in the middle for easy turning. The RTV offers increased security with 11 video
cameras. It can accommodate two wheelchairs, 47 seated passengers and up to 53
standees. After local testing, the vehicle returns to the
manufacturer for more tests and retrofitting requested improvements. Later this
year, the vehicle returns to Cleveland, where it will be used for training. RTA has purchased 21 vehicles. Production begins
in September 2007 and ends in February 2008. Initially, they will be housed at the Brooklyn facility. After being placed into service in late 2008, they will operate out of the Hayden Garage. FOR MEDIA INQUIRIES ONLY: Chad Self, 216-566-5211 |
