News & Updates | Newsroom News & Updates: Newsroom RTA news June 10, 2009 RTA employee indicted CLEVELAND -- This is a statement from Joe Calabrese, CEO & General Manager of the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority. - - - - Today, the FBI indicted RTA Project Superintendent/ Construction
Manager Faisal Alatrash. Alatrash has been suspended without pay, effective today. He has
been employed by RTA since August 1990. His current annual salary is $66,107. As soon as we learned of the FBI investigation last December, we
limited this employee’s role in RTA projects and cooperated fully with their
investigation. We are conducting our own internal audit to determine whether or
not there was any overpayment for services or work that was not performed to
specification. If we determine that was the case, we will do everything we can
to recover damages. It is wrong for any employee to use his position with a public
entity for personal gain. We have very dedicated, hard-working employees and,
frankly, are outraged that one of our own might have betrayed the public trust.
Fortunately, there is no evidence that these alleged actions in any
way jeopardized the safety of our passengers, employees or the public. We have many checks and balances in place to make sure that our
procurement and change order procedures are followed. However, there are always
ways to improve and we are looking very carefully at our procedures to ensure
that they will protect against this type of behavior. We will take steps to
modify and strengthen those procedures, if necessary, to make sure that this
type of situation will not happen again. FOR MEDIA INQUIRIES ONLY:
