RTA Releases additional
information about the low ridership “Big Bus” Routes which will be Modified or
Eliminated on September 20, 2009.
CLEVELAND - Officials of the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit
Authority released the list of the low ridership “Big Bus” routes that will be
modified or eliminated effective September 20, 2009. These routes are in addition to the Community Circulators routes,
which have received significant media and public attention.
These modifications were fully discussed at several public
hearings in 2008, but official action on these services was deferred until
September 2009. Although modification
of these routes was included in the 2009 budget that was adopted by the Board
of Trustees in December of 2008, it was hoped that action could be avoided if
additional revenues were made available. Unfortunately, this was not the case as the national recession has
resulted in much fewer revenues for RTA. Revenues to RTA from the Sales Tax alone are projected to be over $18
million less in 2009 than in 2008.
The following service modifications and eliminations will
take place effective Sunday, September 20, 2009:
- #5 Chagrin - Service between Lander Road and Chagrin Falls will be discontinued
- #18 W. 11th - Hinckley –Discontinue route due to
low ridership

“We have run out of options and time” said CEO and General
Manager Joe Calabrese. “ We were able to hold on to these services for 12
months longer than we originally thought, but now we are left with no
choice. We simply can’t spend money we
don’t have.”
RTA is urging customers to attend one of 12 Community
Meetings being held to assist customers to identify alternative RTA
