Arts in Transit

The Board of Trustees of the Greater Cleveland Regional Authority (RTA) established the Arts in Transit program in 1991. The first committee members were appointed later that year. In accordance with that Policy, one percent of a project's construction costs were be set aside for public art.

 Arts in Transit

Since 1991, more than 20 works of art have been placed on permanent display in various media at major GCRTA passenger facilities including Rail Stations and Transit Centers.  GCRTA was able to add significant pieces of public art from local, National, and international artists to most of the renovation of its Red Line Rail Stations and Transit centers under this program incorporating both functional and applied artwork throughout the system.

In 2013 FTA removed public art as an eligible grant expense thereby eliminating the Arts in Transit program.  However, that did not damage GCRTA’s commitment to public art. It continues to grow in a different form.  GCRTA has been very successful in working with community groups, art organizations, and local foundations to continue enhancing and beautifying the community through the expression of public art on various elements of GCRTA controlled infrastructure such as retaining walls, bridge structures, rail stations, and others.

See below to view some of the outstanding art pieces that are incorporated into GCRTA’s system of stations and infrastructure. GCRTA is open to collaboration with local groups and artists to continue its art program.  Please contact Maribeth Feke to if interested in connecting our community through public art.
