 Safety on a grade crossing

PEDESTRIAN CROSSING

When crossing tracks, only cross at designated walkways. Prior to crossing tracks look in both directions to assure that there are no trains in sight, and then proceed with caution. Allow the train time and distance prior to crossing the tracks to avoid coming into contact with a second train traveling in the opposite direction.

Do not step on the rails, step over the rails when crossing and never walk or sit on a rail or platform edge. Avoid wearing personnel radios or other devices that may hinder your ability to detect the presence of an oncoming train. Never walk between train cars or attempt to hop aboard a moving train or other rail equipment.

Under the Ohio Revised Code, anyone convicted of trespassing or being in restricted areas of the right-of-way can be fined up to $250.00 and sentenced to a 30-day jail term.

VEHICLE GRADE CROSSINGS

Use special caution at grade crossings. Please remember the following tips for motorists at grade crossings:

  1. Prior to entering a grade crossing, carefully observe all traffic, both vehicle and train.
  2. Turn off the radio and do not use phones or other devices that can hinder your senses.
    The trains are very quiet.
  3. Look and listen in both directions prior to entering the grade crossing.
  4. Before crossing the tracks, ensure there is adequate room on the other side of the tracks for your entire vehicle.
  5. Cross the tracks at a safe speed and do not stop on the tracks.
  6. If a train passes from one direction, make sure that another train, possibly hidden by the first train, is not approaching on an adjacent track.
  7. For grade crossings equipped with warning devices such as light, bells, and/or gates, always obey the signals. Never ignore signs and never drive around lowered crossing gates.
  8. If the view of the crossing is not adequate, do not attempt to cross the tracks until you can see that no trains are approaching.
  9. Weather conditions such as: fog, rain and wind, can affect drivers' ability to see and hear approaching trains and to determine the safety of crossing the tracks. Additional caution must be exercised during such conditions.
  10. In vehicles with manual transmissions, place the transmission in a gear that will not require changing gears while crossing the tracks.
  11. Never race a train to a grade crossing.
