This fall, we celebrate a truly remarkable milestone — 45 years of safe operating and 47 years of service from Paratransit Operator James “Jimmy” E. Smith. Since joining the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) in 1978, Jimmy has been a constant presence of patience, care, and professionalism on Cleveland’s streets, earning the respect of his peers and the gratitude of thousands of passengers along the way.
Jimmy’s story began with a leap of faith — and a telegram. A friend recommended that he apply after seeing a notice that GCRTA was hiring drivers for its Community Responsive Transit (CRT) service. At the time, Jimmy was working in a factory surrounded by chemical fumes and working long hours. Encouraged by family to find a healthier path, he applied, trained while working both jobs, and soon discovered he had found his calling.
Back then, CRT was a pilot program serving seniors in select neighborhoods during limited hours — a small but meaningful start to what would eventually become GCRTA’s Paratransit service. “It was like a family,” Jimmy remembered. “We had our regulars, mostly seniors, and they used to argue over who I belonged to — ‘he’s, my grandson!’ one would say, and another would claim, ‘no, he’s mine!’”
As the service grew and evolved under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Jimmy transitioned with it, helping Paratransit expand countywide. He also briefly worked in dispatch and as a Service Monitor — experiences that deepened his understanding of the system and the people behind it. Through it all, he has carried one belief: every passenger is precious cargo.
“You can drive anything — freight, merchandise, whatever,” he said. “But when you’re carrying someone’s life or wellbeing, it’s different. You have to treat them like precious cargo.”
Jimmy credits his record to the excellent training he received early in his career and the lessons passed down from his father. He learned to drive before his teenage years and was taught never to rush, to stay patient, and to always be aware of his surroundings — values that have guided him to an extraordinary record: just two preventable collisions in nearly five decades behind the wheel.
A Mentor and a Musician
Outside of work, Jimmy finds joy and balance through music. A lifelong drummer, he calls music his “therapy” and still plays regularly. He’s even talked with old bandmates about reviving their group after retirement — though, for now, he isn’t quite ready to step away from the operator’s seat.
When that time does come, Jimmy hopes to remain with GCRTA as a mentor to new operators. Helping others grow has always been one of his favorite parts of the job. He still remembers how supportive employees were when he first joined and sees that same spirit reflected in GCRTA’s Positive Impact Mentorship Program, which helps new hires build relationships and learn from experienced operators. “It ensures that support system is still here, no matter what,” he said.
Words of Wisdom
Jimmy’s advice to new operators is simple but powerful: be patient, courteous, and mindful. He encourages them to take pride in their role, reminding them that Paratransit Operators are specialists in their field — professionals who carry not just passengers, but trust. His golden rule is to never take anything personally and to approach each day with empathy and awareness.
Preparation and health, he adds, are equally essential. Jimmy believes the energy you bring to work is contagious, and that rest and well-being are key to safety. Especially in Cleveland’s unpredictable weather, he says, being proactive makes all the difference.
Faith, Family, and Gratitude
At the core of Jimmy’s success is his faith and gratitude. “I’m just a vehicle in this life,” he said. “I give all glory to the Almighty.”
Born at Mount Sinai Hospital and raised in the Lee–Harvard neighborhood of East Cleveland, Jimmy is one of ten siblings and a graduate of John F. Kennedy High School. His parents both worked two jobs to support their family, and their example of hard work shaped the foundation of his own career.
Now 72, Jimmy and his wife, Chrishon “Cookie” Smith, have built a large and loving family of their own — eight children, sixteen grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. When asked what this recognition means to him, Jimmy called it a tremendous honor, one made possible by his positive attitude, great coworkers, and the family-like environment that exists at Paratransit.
A Legacy of Service
Throughout his career, Jimmy has been recognized for his commitment to excellence, earning accolades such as Operator of the Month, a Champion of Safety Award, and a 40-Year Safe Operator Award. Most recently, he earned second place in the 2025 Bus & Paratransit Roadeo.
His 45 years of safe operation will be honored at this year’s Employee Recognition Banquet.
When asked what advice he would give to anyone considering a career in transit, his message is simple: join for the benefits, stay for the people. “You’ll find a family here,” he said — one that encourages, supports, and grows together.
Jimmy, thank you for your dedication, patience, and unwavering commitment to the GCRTA and to the passengers who count on you every day. Your career reminds us that every mile matters — and every ride connects us closer together.
