Using Fare Capping with the Transit App

Set up your EZfare account in the Transit app, add funds by card or cash, and scan at the validator to ride with fare capping.

 Using Fare Capping with the Transit App

Step 1 Set Up Your Account

  • Open the App: Launch the Transit app on your phone.
  • Start Setup: From the home screen, tap the "Buy" button next to the EZfare logo or select "Pay with QR Code".
  • Choose Device: Tap "Pay with your Mobile Phone".
  • If Prompted, Enter Your Account Details.
  • If you don't have an account, enter your email and name.
  • Create Password: Set a password that is at least 12 characters long and includes one letter and one number.
  • Confirmation: You will see a message confirming "EZfare added to your Transit account".

Step 2 Add Funds

  • Select Payment: Tap "Select your payment method" and choose Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Payment card.
  • Choose Amount: Pick a preset amount ($5, $10, $20, or $50) or enter a Custom amount.
  • Confirm: Review your total and tap "Proceed to Payment".

Paying with Cash?

Visit a VanillaDirect location (store or kiosk)

Select "Add funds" and "Add funds at store or kiosk".

Ensure VanillaDirect is selected. Show the generated barcode to a cashier at a participating retail location to load your funds.

Step 3 Scan and Ride

  • Open Your Code: When you are ready to board, tap "Ride Now" to display your personal QR code.
  • Scan to Board: Hold the QR code up to the validator on the vehicle.
  • Check Balance: Your available balance and any "Low balance" alerts will be visible right below your QR code.

Quick Tips

  • Changing Your Mind: If you start a purchase but want to stop, tap the 'X' in the top corner. Choosing "Abandon" will take you back to the main screen with your QR code active.
  • Planning Ahead: If you aren't ready to board yet, select "Ride Later" to return to the route maps and trip planning.
