Car Free in Cleveland Day Goes Virtual

September 21, 2021

For Immediate release

Cleveland, OH – The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) is pivoting from hosting its rally on Public Square (due to 100% chance of rain) to celebrating Car Free in Cleveland Day on September 22 virtually!  Internationally known as World Car Free Day, the day encourages drivers to give up their car for the day and utilize other modes of transportation such as Public Transit, Biking, Ridesharing, Walking, etc.

Join us in the virtual celebration by liking, sharing or commenting on our social posts that will promote alternate ways to commute, how it can affect the environment and improve communities.  We will also be hosting an Instagram contest.  Participants will be asked to complete tasks to be entered to win one of five prize packs filled with goodies from us, other transit agencies and various community partners.

Transit spurs development communities. Below find some interesting facts:
1. Service access is associated with a 12% decrease in poverty and a 3.1% increase in employment rates.
2. Greater Clevelanders dependent on GCRTA to get to work collectively earn $485.5 million annually.
3. GCRTA created and sustained a total of 2,977 jobs in Cuyahoga County.
4. Every $1 invested in public transportation generates $5 in economic returns.
5. Home values are 24% higher near public transportation than in other areas.
6. A household can save nearly $10,000 with public transit and living with one less car.
